Charles Hamilton,
M.D., Internist
Dr. Hamilton graduated from The Georgia Institute of
Technology in 1958 and Emory University School of Medicine
in 1964. He continued his post-graduate training at
Grady Memorial Hospital in Internal Medicine, completing
his residency in 1968. After one year in private practice
and four years with the Neighborhood Health Service
of OEO (Office of Economic Opportunity), he began his
current practice of Internal Medicine/adult medicine
at Asa G. Yancey Health Center in December 1973.
Dominique Isaac, M.D. Family Practitioner
Dr. Isaac received her undergraduate degree in 1993
from Princeton University in Princeton, NJ. She graduated
with honors form the Department of Sociology, and
also received a certificate in African-American studies.
She earned her medical degree in 1998 from Albany
Medical College in Albany, NY. Dr. Isaac completed
her residency in June 2001 at the Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Luke’s-Illinois Masonic Family Practice Program
in Chicago, IL, where she served as Chief Resident
her final year. She is currently a physician at Asa
G. Yancey Health Center where she practices the full
scope of Family Medicine including pediatrics, women’s
health, adult medicine and prenatal care. She is Board-certified
in Family Medicine.
Denise McLaughlin, Certified Nurse Midwife,
MPH
Ms. McLaughlin received her nurse-midwifery education
at the State University of New York (Downstate Medical
Center) in 1975 and her Masters in Public Health from
Columbia University in 1978. While she has been associated
with the Grady Health System since 1976, she currently
provides prenatal and family planning services on
Tuesdays and Thursdays at Asa G. Yancey Health Center
In addition, she facilitates special group classes
for pregnant women, such as a Centering Pregnancy
Program, that meets on Tuesdays.
Mamie Phillips, M.D. Pediatrician
Dr. Phillips graduated from Spellman College in Atlanta,
GA with a B.S. in 1974. She received her medical degree
from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee
in 1978 and completed her residency in pediatrics
at Emory University and Grady hospital in 1981. After
working for many years in private practice, she joined
the Emory faculty as a pediatrician at Asa G. Yancey
Health Center in 2000. Dr. Phillip’s area of
special interest in medicine is patient education.
She is Board-certified in Pediatrics.
Michael Rafferty, M.D. Internist
Dr. Rafferty graduated from Amherst College in Amherst,
MA in 1974 with B.A. in Russian Language. He received
his M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine
in 1979 and completed residency training in Internal
Medicine at The George Washington University Hospital
in Washington, DC in 1982. He is Board-certified in
Internal Medicine (1982). Following his training he
served two years in the Indian Health Service in Kotzebue,
Alaska and completed fellowship training in the Robert
Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University
of California in San Francisco. He joined the Emory
University faculty and the Grady Memorial Hospital
staff in 1988 following six months with the U.S. Information
Agency in the former Soviet Union. He has recently
participated in Grady Health System exchanges with
the former Soviet republic of Georgia. His other interests
include quality improvement and medical informatics.
Carla Schissel, PhD, Certified Adult Nurse
Practitioner
Carla Schissel received her B.S. in nursing from the
University of Pittsburgh in 1964, her Master’s
of Science in nursing from the University of Maryland
in 1968 and her Doctor of Philosophy from Emory University
in 1979. She received her nurse practitioner certification
from the University of Rochester in 1974 and is certified
by the American Nurses’ Association Credentialing
Center. She has been a nurse practitioner at Asa G.
Yancey Health Center in adult medicine since 1974.
Betti Jo Steele, M.D. Pediatrician
Dr. Steele graduated from Mercer University in Macon,
GA with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1979. She received
her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia
in Augusta, GA in 1983. 1n 1986 she completed her
residency in pediatrics at Emory University and Grady
Hospital. She has been on the faculty at Emory University
since 1986 and has been a pediatrician at Asa G. Yancey
Health Center since 1991. Dr. Steele is Board-certified
in Pediatrics.
Jeanne Urschel, Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner
Jeanne Urschel graduated with a B.S. in Nursing from
The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota
in 1964. She received her Masters of Science in Nursing
in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the Medical
College of Georgia in 1979. In 1982 she was certified
as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses’
Association Credentialing Center. She has provided
primary care for people 16 years and older since 1979
at Asa G. Yancey Health Center.
Elizabeth Walton, M.D. Internist
Dr. Walton graduated with honors with a B.S. from
the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1989 and earned
her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia
in 1994. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine
at the George Washington University Medical Center
in Washington, DC in 1997. Dr. Walton joined the Emory
faculty and has been a physician for adult patients
at Asa Yancey since 1998. Dr. Walton is
Board-certified in Internal Medicine and serves as the
