Lifestyle Medicine involves the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, to prevent, treat, and, oftentimes, reverse the lifestyle-related, chronic diseases that are all too prevalent. Patients at the Emory Family Medicine Clinic can obtain appointments at a dedicated Lifestyle Clinic were scientifically validated, and holistic approaches to the focus areas of nutrition, exercise, and mental health are emphasized. The Emory Preventive Medicine Division, in conjunction with Emory staff, Faculty and Preventive Medicine Residency, have developed a specialized set of services to assist and guide patients who are motivated to make a lifestyle change to improve their health.
Physicians in this clinic regularly see patients with the following chronic conditions:
- Obesity
- Diabetes and Pre-diabetes
- High Cholesterol
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Disease
- Depression
Patients are enrolled in a 3-month program focused on reorienting their approach to health. Each patient is given the opportunity to learn new things regarding one of the main focus areas. Whether it is being everyday life, learning how to meal plan, or make adjustments that decrease the effects of stress on health – patients are provided the tools that make positive change possible.
The Lifestyle Clinic at Emory Family Medicine follows a shared (group) medical appointment model where patients have an opportunity to learn from each other, as well as the experts. Attendees are provided educational materials, participate in food tastings, engage with peers, and receive a medical evaluation at each session. This last point is an important difference between standard weight management groups, and the lifestyle clinic – licensed and board-certified Emory physicians are present at each session to answer complex questions about medicine, medical conditions, and treatments.
