Eligibility
The Preventive Medicine Residency program follows the established guidelines set forth by Emory University School of Medicine and the Office of Graduate Medical Education concerning resident eligibility and selection.
All appointments of residents to the Preventive Medicine Residency Staff of the Emory University School of Medicine must either:
- hold an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school within the United States or Canada and they must be graduates of schools approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the America Osteopathic Association (AOA), or
- Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States or Canada must have received a current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have a full, active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction, or
- Graduates of medical school outside of the United States who have completed the Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school, or
- International medical graduates who are non-US citizens with an ECFMG sponsored J-1 visa
In addition, our program (like that of many preventive medicine residencies) will only accept residents who have already completed a PGY1 clinical year that complies with ACGME standards for preventive medicine. Non-eligible applicants will not be considered for selection in the Emory Preventive Medicine Residency Program.
Application Materials
Residents wishing to apply to the Emory Preventive Medicine Program must provide a universal application with attached photo (available at: http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/about_res/universal.pdf), medical school and graduate school (if applicable) transcripts, three letters of recommendation and a personal statement. Generally, applications are accepted year round.
Interviews
Eligible applicants are considered for selection based upon academic credentials, ability, overall preparedness, communication skills, aptitude, personal qualities and experience in and commitment to preventive medicine. Usually, residents are interviewed in October with start dates ranging from January of the same academic year through July of the following academic year. The size and flexibility of the program allow for the accommodation of varied start dates depending on the needs of the resident.
Resident Appointment
The selection of residents is the responsibility of the Resident Advisory Committee (RAC), which has the opportunity to review applicant materials, rate residents against the published selection standards and agree as a group on those residents to be selected. Residents are accepted upon contingency of employment, which will suffice in meeting the ACGME core and preventive medicine competencies. The department of Family and Preventive Medicine does not provide a stipend for the residents, however, the program does work with residents and the sites of their choosing to provide the full resident stipend and customary health and dental benefits to each resident.
Program Expectations
In addition to maintaining standards of professionalism, work ethic and patient care, residents are expected to be present at and involved in the educational didactic sessions held twice per month. All residents are also invited to attend annual training held by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on leadership and occupational medicine. Reimbursement for the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) annual meeting is available and residents are encouraged to submit abstracts for posters or presentations.
