Chair's Welcome

Ted Johnson Theodore Johnson, II, MD, MPH

Professor and Chair

Welcome to the website of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine! I’m proud to serve as Chair for a department uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive team-based primary care medical services, interdisciplinary health professions education, and research in community-based settings in the metropolitan Atlanta area. We are celebrating our 22nd year as a Department within the Emory School of Medicine, and proud of our positive trajectory as evidenced by:

  • Our Family Medicine residency training program’s expansion from 24 to 30 individual trainees
  • Our education programs helping Emory School of Medicine match more graduates in Family Medicine in 2017 than ever before in our School’s history
  • Opening of two new faculty Family Medicine practice sites with full-scope Family Medicine practice
  • Our new Preventive Medicine leadership (program director and division director) matching 2 Emory residency graduates in this year’s Preventive Medicine residency class
  • Our Physician Assistant program being ranked in the top 3 in the nation
  • Our Family Medicine training site being certified by NCQA as a level 3 patient-centered medical home
  • Our recent research and program funding from PCORI, the University Research Council, and coverage of findings by The New York Times and The Washington Post.

We hope you will take the time to investigate our department website and that the information provided here will assist you in finding a provider, learn about our residencies and other educational opportunities or our research activities and community service initiatives, or help our alumni and community partners maintain their relationship with our department.
